Hello, friends. As I promised, here goes my first demonstration on how I draw a face. It goes in Spanish and in English :D

Mi método de dibujo cambia cada tanto y trato de ir adaptándolo a mis necesidades y al tiempo. No siempre hago las cosas de la misma forma y creo que eso ayuda a darle un toque de aire fresco a mis diferentes trabajos.
My technique for drawing changes every once and then and I try to adapt it to my needs and time. I don’t always work the same way and maybe that helps to give some fresh air to my different works.
1. Boceto inicial / Outline:
Realizo simples trazos para delinear la forma de la cabeza. Algunas veces también la silueta del torso.
- No me preocupo por que sea todo exacto, lo que necesito es rapidez. Si comenzara desde este punto a dibujar los detalles así como los ojos, la boca y demás, antes que la forma de la cabeza, sería un riesgo y una pérdida de tiempo posiblemente.
- A veces trazo la forma del cabello también. Aunque sé que posiblemente no quede de esa forma al final, de todas formas, sirve como guía.
I make simple strokes to outline the shape of the head. Sometimes I draw the shape of the torso too.
- I don’t worry too much to make it so precise, what I need at this stage is speed. If I start, in this point, to draw details like the eyes, mouth and else, before the shape of the head, it would be a risk and probably a waste of time.
- Sometimes I also draw the shape of the hair. Although I know that it mostly won’t end up that way, it works as a guide.
2. Líneas y mas líneas / Lines and more lines:
Ok, tengo mi silueta; es hora de agregar líneas para darle forma al rostro.
Hay personas que no me creen cuando lo digo, pero lo mejor que pueden hacer es ver cómo lo hacía Andrew Loomis. Practicarlo y luego adaptarlo al estilo de trabajo propio. En fin… luego de trazar las líneas del rostro, trazo los ojos: posición y tamaño.
Luego la nariz y la boca, todo esto sin preocuparme de que las líneas se vean bien. Solo necesito las formas. Tiendo a hacer muchas líneas en esta etapa porque quiero que todo esté en su lugar; de esa forma los elementos del rostro serán “solidos”. Ya podré ocuparme luego de darle forma a las líneas.
Ok, I have my outline; it’s time to add some lines to shape the face.
Some people do not believe me when I say it, but the best you can do is to watch how Andrew Loomis used to do it. One should practice it and then adapt it to one’s own style. Well then… After I draw the face lines, I draw the eyes: position and size.
Then I trace the nose and the mouth, all this without worrying to make the lines look good in this moment. I tend to make a lot of lines in this stage because I want everything in its place; this way, the elements of the face will be “solid”. I’ll work later in giving shape to the lines.
3. Pulido / Polishing:
Hora de ponernos serios y darle vida al rosto: lo primero de lo que me ocupo son los ojos y las cejas; para mí siempre son lo más importante, ya que es lo primero en lo que se fija una persona. Luego la nariz: a tener cuidado con que la nariz no termine llamando más la atención que los ojos. Voy y vengo mucho entre la nariz y los ojos. Cuando me siento seguro paso a la boca. No menciono casi las orejas porque me ocupo de ellas en cualquier momento. Casi siempre voy cambiando líneas, haciéndolas más delgadas, o gruesas si quiero dar volumen. En esta etapa final el borrador –o el “CTRL + Z”– es mi mejor amigo.
It’s time to get serious and breathe life into the face: First, I deal with the eyes and the eyebrows; for me, they’re the most important part, because it’s the first thing a person looks at. Then, the nose: let’s be careful with it so it does not claim more attention from the watcher than the eyes. I come and go a lot between the eyes and the nose. When I feel secure about them I move to the mouth. I don’t say too much about the ears because I work on them in any time. I always change the lines: I make them thinner, or thicker if I want to add volume. In this final stage, the eraser –or “CTRL + Z”– is my best friend.
